A 26-year-old California woman was pronounced dead after swimmers were swept out of Waioka pond in Hana by a flash flood Thursday morning, the Maui Fire Department reported.
Hana firefighters and a rescue crew aboard the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter responded to reports at 9:56 a.m. of multiple swimmers swept out to the ocean from the pond, also known as Venus Pool, as a flash flood pushed through the pond.
Fire crews confirmed that two swimmers had climbed to safety to avoid being swept into the ocean. A third person was able to swim back to shore, the Fire Department reported.
The California woman was missing after last being seen clinging to rocks as the flash flood swept through, according to the Fire Department.
With the help of local residents, Hana firefighters located the woman, who was unresponsive on the rocky shoreline, at about 1:30 p.m., the Fire Department said. She was airlifted by Air One to awaiting medics, who pronounced her dead.
Hana resident Tony de Jetley said streams and rivers were overflowing within minutes of heavy rainfall Thursday morning.
“We had extremely heavy rain, extremely heavy rain,” he said.
