Aoi Asahina attended Asanaro High School, and was later scouted Hope’s Peak Academy as part of Class 78th as the Ultimate Swimming Pro. From her appearance she might be 17 or 20 years old. At the beginning of the Killing School Life in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Aoi appears to be young high school-aged teenager, but due to the memory loss she is two years older than she believed, closer to her late teens or early 20s.

Aoi Asahina‘s Appearance

Aoi Asahina stands at a height of 160cm (5’3”) making her the shortest female in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and weighs around 50kg (110lb) with a lean but curvaceous build. Hina’s chest size is 35 in

Aio has tanned skin and brown hair that she wears in a ponytail in a very high curled ponytail accessorized with a paperclip-style barette. In the game, she wears athletic shorts and a red track suit jacket over a white shirt. In one of her official artworks, she wears a blue bathing suit with a white box logo on the front with some Japanese Characters that spell her last name and a single white stripe on the right side of her bust. She also wears the Hope’s Peak Academy-branded blue dolphin hotpants and green sneakers, a white tank top, and a red tracksuit jacket with white piping and her previous high school’s logo on the chest. She wears knee-length white socks, a red knee brace over her right knee, a band-aid on her left knee.

Hina also has a rather curvaceous body that is usually the subject of Toko Fukawa/Genocider Shō’s (Genocide Jack’s/Jill’s) harassment.

After leaving Hope’s Peak Academy and joining the Future Foundation, Aoi wears a modified version of the Foundation’s standard female business suit uniform, wearing a green tie and shorts instead of a skirt. Under her suit jacket and dress shirt, she wears a white tank top. She still wears her hair in a ponytail, but it is considerably longer indicating her hair has grown over the years.

Personality

Aoi Asahina is a kind, energetic, and enthusiastic girl who tries to make friends with everyone she encounters and include them in her activities in the Killing School Life. Aoi can be a little foggy and forgetful at times, relying on the memory technique of writing people’s names three times on her palm to remember them – a trick she taught her brother, Yuta.

Being so friendly, Aoi Asahina (Hina) is the first person to offer to introduce themselves to Makoto Naegi. She quickly forms a good friendship with Sakura, and tries to get Toko and Chihiro Fujisaki involved in their activities, even if they don’t want to be involved.

Aoi Asahina (Hina) is also a quite emotional, especially regarding the issue of death, such as crying at the death of Hifumi and holding his head in her chest. Aoi Asahina can be quite temperamental at times, such as being disgusted when Celeste revealed her motive for killing Taka and Hifumi. In Chapter 4, she tried to have everyone killed, including herself, after the death of Sakura, after being tricked by the Mastermind, into believing she killed herself in a fit of despair, believing everyone, including herself, to be responsible for her death.

Aoi Asahina‘s positive attitude is truly challenged by the events of the Killing Game, and it fundamentally changes her outlook on the world and her relationships. She is extremely loyal to her friends to such a degree that when they are harmed it shatters her ability to emotionally cope.

Aoi Asahina‘s Relationships

Because of their shared interest in athletics, Hina and Sakura became fast friends. Protein drinks are also popular among them. When Byakuya disparaged Sakura, Aoi Asahina became enraged and slapped him. Her friend’s death had such an impact on her that she began blaming anyone who said anything negative about her and plotting to kill herself and the others after reading the forged suicide note.

She also grew close to Makoto Naegi, whose abilities as the Ultimate Hope was crucial in her recuperation, both during the Killing School Life and when she was thrust into the Final Killing Game, which put Aoi Asahina emotionally to the test once more. Makoto’s strong and unwavering belief in the power of hope and friendship had a profound effect on Aoi, and in her darkest moments during both the Killing School Life and the Final Killing Game, he was able to pull her back from the brink and convince her that the future was worth living for in honor of the friends they lost along the way.

Aoi Asahina was disliked by both Toko and Shō. Despite this Hina was the only one who actually tried to talk with Toko.

In Ultra Despair Girls she was envied by Toko because she became a formal member of the Future Foundation.

Aoi Asahina‘s Talent and Abilities

Aoi was always an extremely sporty person who loved to exercise, and participated in many team sports during her school career, including track, basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis, and her favorite sport: competitive swimming. Since elementary school, she broke records in every swimming contest she entered, and was chosen to become an Olympic cadet. Her younger brother Yuta was also a competitive and talented swimmer, but not – by his own admission – as talented as Aoi.

Aoi’s athleticism is a core aspect of her personality and sense of self. Her passion for sports stems from a desire to compete and improve herself, rather than from a drive to win. Aoi Asahina says it herself: “It’s not about winning that I enjoy sports, you know? To get to the top, you have to fight and suffer and give it everything you’ve got. It’s the anticipation of a painful loss, as well as the fear of it. It’s just…lonely when you finally achieve your aim. It’s a little lonely up there, ya know? That is why, when it comes to swimming, I want to push myself as much as possible. I want to reach the greatest peak possible!”.

Due to her fitness and athleticism, Aoi is capable of holding her own in a fight if necessary, as was shown when she engaged in a fight with Juzo Sakakura.   Aoi Asahina is aiming for the Gold Medal in the Olympics.
