George Floyd was an African-American security guard, truck driver, and former rapper. On May 25, 2020, Floyd was killed by a white arresting officer, Derek Chauvin, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was 46. The other 3 law enforcement officers at the scene were Tou Thao, Thomas K. Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng. During his final moments, Floyd could be heard pleading “I Can’t Breathe” multiple times. It was the same words uttered by Eric Garner during Garner’s fatal chokehold by police officers back in 2014. George Perry Floyd was born on October 14, 1973, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He had 3 siblings, Bridgett, Philonise, and Terrence. Floyd grew up in Houston, Texas, where he attended Yates High School. During his tenure, he excelled as an athlete, playing on both the football and basketball teams. At the tight end position, he led the Yates football team to the 1992 state championship game. Floyd continued his studies at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1995. He left in 1997.

CAREER and DEATH
Post-college, Floyd gave up sports and moved back to his home city of Houston. He joined and performed briefly as a member of the rap group ‘Screwed Up Click’ with DJ Screw. Floyd’s stage name at the time was “Big Floyd.” He was featured on projects such as DJ Screw’s Diary of the Originator (2004) and Screw Zoo Freestyle (2018). Floyd spent his latter years in the state of Minnesota. He supported himself working as a truck driver and as a security guard at a restaurant in Minneapolis. Floyd lost his security job due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

On May 25, 2020, Floyd was killed during an arrest in the Powderhorn community of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was accused of using a fake $20 bill at a local shop. While he was handcuffed and faced down on the ground, officer Derek Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. During the tragic incident, officer J. Alexander Kueng held Floyd’s back while officer Thomas K. Lane held his legs. A fourth officer, Tou Thao, stood close by and prevented any onlookers from intervening. Floyd was heard saying “I Can’t Breathe” multiple times, but his cries went unheard.

Officer Derek Michael Chauvin was later arrested and charged with 2nd-degree murder and 2nd-degree manslaughter. He had been in law enforcement for more than 19 years. Prior to Floyd’s death, he’s had 18 other complaints on his record. It’s also worth noting that both Floyd and Chauvin once served as security guards at the Latin nightclub ‘El Nuevo Rodeo.’ They had overlapping shifts according to one of the club’s former owners. The other three arresting officers Tou Thao, Thomas K. Lane, and J. George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, at the age of 46. According to an independent autopsy by Floyd’s family, his cause of death was asphyxiation due to sustained pressure on his neck. However, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled that he died from cardiac arrest (heart failure) after being restrained by the knee-to-neck technique. Floyd was 6ft 6in tall and he was of African-American descent. He’s survived by three children, Quincy, Connie, and 6-year-old Gianna.
