Down to Earth Organic & Natural health food store will celebrate its 40th health anniversary with a 40 percent off sale on Friday.

The original Down to Earth opened in Wailuku in 1977 and closed years ago. But now there are five locations in the state, including one in Kahului and four on Oahu.

Customers will receive at least 40 percent off more than 100 best-selling items while supplies last. Limits apply. A detailed list of sale items is posted on the company website at www.downtoearth.org.

“Over the past 40 years, Down to Earth has grown and flourished to become an important part of Hawaii’s community with five locations in Hawaii,” says 25-year CEO and CFO Mark Fergusson. “We have stores in Honolulu, Kailua, Pearlridge and Kapolei on Oahu and Kahului on Maui. This is a banner year for us –not only because of the 40th anniversary but also because we have a major expansion underway.”

Yes, the company will open its new Kakaako location in late 2017 or early 2018, a new and larger Pearlridge location will open in the Pearlridge Center during the second half of 2018, and the Kailua store will move into a larger space in the former Macy’s building by early 2019.

The expansive Kahului store boasts vegetarian foods, a hot and cold deli section, an upstairs area for dining with views and ongoing cooking classes.

“While all this growth and expansion is possible due to the hard work and commitment of the Down to Earth team, it is mainly due to customers’ loyal support throughout the years,” Fergusson adds.

“For all this time, we have served health-conscious islanders with organic and natural products, and through community outreach that includes cooking classes, health and nutritional seminars, and a wide variety of events to promote better health. Our customers know they can rely on us for quality products, great value, and excellent service from our friendly and knowledgeable staff.”

Down to Earth is the current winner of Best Health Food Store 10 Years in a Row as awarded by a daily newspaper on Oahu.

It’s a multiple runner up in The Best of Maui contest in The Maui News.

“We are honored and humbled to have won this award. This accomplishment is due to our customers’ loyal support, our team members’ hard work and dedication, and our commitment to providing quality products and excellent service. It is an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Hawaii by providing the best products with the best customer service,” Fergusson states.

“Down to Earth’s many accomplishments, and our leadership in the community, are a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and commitment that each of our team members brings to their service at Down to Earth. For them, working at Down to Earth is not just a job, it is truly a service to the more important mission of helping to improve the health of our island communities and our aina. With the support of our many loyal customers, I am confident Hawaii residents will continue to choose Down to Earth as their preferred natural food store.”

It all began right here on Maui.

“Down to Earth began in 1977, in Wailuku, Maui, when a group of friends started our first store, and shortly afterwards opened the King Street store. The slogan used to be, ‘Healthy foods at prices that won’t make you sick!,’ and we educated the public about the benefits of living a vegetarian lifestyle.”

In reflecting on company achievements over the years, Fergusson concludes that, “The success of Down to Earth is also due to our unshakable values, our commitment of being in business to help improve the health and wellbeing of our customers and to serve the community.”
