ORIGIN
Charlie Murphy was an American actor, comedian, and screenwriter. He rose to prominence as a cast member and writer on the sketch comedy series, Chappelle’s Show. His film credits include Jungle Fever (1991), King’s Ransom (2005), and Lottery Ticket (2010). Murphy was born Charles Quinton Murphy on July 12, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York. His mother, Lillian, was a telephone operator, and his father, Charles, a transit officer. He had a brother, Eddie Murphy, and half-brother, Vernon Lynch, Jr. Murphy spent six years in the U.S. Navy before starting his career in entertainment. There he served as a boiler technician from 1978 to 1984.

CAREER
Prior to films, Murphy worked with the hip-hop group ‘K-9 Posse’ on a number of projects. He was credited as executive producer of their 1988 debut studio album. He penned the singles “Somebody’s Brother and “Say Who Say What”. Murphy started his acting career with small roles in films like Harlem Nights (1989) and Jungle Fever (1991). He landed a more prominent role as “Gusto” in the 1993 comedy ‘CB4’ starring Chris Rock. He was later featured in Ice Cube‘s comedy-drama, The Players Club (1998). Other films include King’s Ransom (2005) with Anthony Anderson, Lottery Ticket (2010) with Bow Wow, and Meet the Blacks (2016) with Mike Epps.

In 2003, Murphy became a cast member on the sketch comedy ‘Chappelle’s Show’ alongside Dave Chappelle and Donnell Rawlings. He held various roles and also served as a writer. He was probably best known for the skit “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories”, in which he recounted his encounters with other celebrities. Murphy held a recurring role as “Frank” on the TBS sitcom, Are We There Yet? (2010-11). He starred as Victor “Vic” Hargrove in the comedy series, Black Jesus (2014-15). He’s also made appearances on the series ‘1000 Ways to Die’, ‘Hawaii Five-0’ and ‘Power’.

Murphy voiced the character “Ed Wuncler III” from the Adult Swim television series, The Boondocks (2005-10). He lent his voice to the series, Black Dynamite (2012-14), and to the film, Norbit (2007). He’s also done voice work for ‘Budweiser’ and for the video game ‘Grand Theft Auto’. His screenwriter credits include ‘Vampire in Brooklyn’, ‘Paper Soldiers’ and ‘Charlie Murphy: I Will Not Apologize’.

PERSONAL
Charlie Murphy died on April 12, 2017, at the age of 57. His reported cause of death was complications from leukemia. Murphy is survived by three children. He was married to ‘Tisha Taylor’ from August 1997 until her death in December 2009. She died of cervical cancer.

Murphy was 6ft 1in tall and he was of African-American descent. He had an estimated net worth of $2.5 million.
