He was a counsellor for people with substance abuse problems and also played shortstop for Fisk University in Tennessee. In 1972, he met Dorothy when they were both stationed in the Frankfurt army. They were married a year later and the year after, the sports legend was born. When Derek was 4, the family moved to Michigan so Sanderson could complete his maters’ degree and subsequently get a doctorate in sociology.

In 1996, Charles and his only son founded a foundation that encourages people to pursue a healthy living whilst staying away from drugs and alcohol.
